Special notice: Corporate stabilization under Federal Credit Union Act proposed

03/27/09: NCUA Corporate Stabilization proposal to Congress

The NCUA Board on Thursday met in closed session to consider its next steps in stabilization of the corporate credit union system. The board approved a plan to ask Congress for Federal Credit Union Act amendments that would create a Temporary Corporate Credit Union stabilization Fund. The amendments would also increase NCUA's borrowing authority from the $100 million limit applied currently to $6 billion and provide for replenishment of the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund, through assessments to natural-person credit unions, over a period of up to seven years.

NCUA conserves U.S. Central FCU, Western Corporate FCU

Special notice: NCUA on March 20 took U.S. Central and WesCorp into conservatorship; it also says it has determined the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund should be keeping reserves of $5.9 billion, not $4.7 billion, for potential losses related to the corporates. Letter 09-CU-06 provides details.
NCUA is holding a webcast today to explain the latest developments. The two-hour program begins at 2 p.m. Eastern; registration is available until 1:45 p.m.
